With a mission to address the needs of marginalised communities in the local area, Rich Mix opened its doors to the public in 2006, ushering in a new era of inclusivity and cultural exchange.
At Rich Mix, the communities of the world unite to create, enjoy, and share culture. It is a space where diverse voices are amplified, and where individuals from different backgrounds can come together to celebrate art in all its forms. From music performances to theatre productions, from film screenings to art exhibitions, Rich Mix has become a hub of artistic expression and a cherished gathering place for locals and visitors alike.
We're proud to support Rich Mix’s Flip the Script. This transformative project, recently bolstered by a grant of £50,000 from The Portal Trust, aims to empower primary school children in Tower Hamlets and Hackney through the magic of film. By promoting learning through film, this programme seeks to enhance children's life chances and foster their creative and personal development.
Flip The Script - Decolonising the Curriculum
The Flip the Script project extends its support beyond the students themselves, providing valuable training opportunities for schoolteachers. By equipping educators with the necessary tools and knowledge. Additionally, the project will include live screenings of movies organised to ignite pupils’ imaginations and expose them to diverse narratives from around the world.
One of the most exciting aspects of Flip the Script is the series of workshops offered to groups of children. These workshops provide a safe and nurturing environment for young minds to explore their creativity and learn the intricacies of filmmaking. Under the guidance of experienced mentors, children will embark on a journey of self-expression, culminating in the creation of their own films.
The importance of arts education for young people cannot be overstated. The arts encourage critical thinking, empathy, and a deep understanding of different cultures and perspectives. By integrating the arts into the curriculum, Flip the Script at Rich Mix could profoundly impact young students’ lives. Opening doors to new possibilities, broadening horizons, and nurturing a love for creativity that will accompany them throughout their lives.
A New Perspective
Rich Mix is excited to introduce its latest project, " Flip the Script: Decolonising the Curriculum." This initiative aims to challenge and reshape the traditional curriculum, infusing it with diverse perspectives and narratives that have historically been marginalised. By actively engaging with and confronting the legacies of colonialism, this project seeks to create a more inclusive and representative educational experience for all students.
"Decolonising the Curriculum" at Rich Mix recognises that education is a powerful tool for social change. By diversifying the stories told in classrooms, students gain a broader understanding of the world and develop critical thinking skills that enable them to challenge systemic inequalities. Through thought-provoking workshops, seminars, and collaborations with local schools and community organisations, Rich Mix is paving the way for a curriculum that reflects the rich tapestry of human experiences.
We're very excited about the prospects of the project and looking forward to the stories that emerge.
