Founded in 1947, the Unicorn is one of the UK’s leading theatre for young audiences, specialising in ‘creating innovative and thrilling productions that encourage children to question and explore the world’.

As part of their mission to ‘transform young lives through theatre’, The Unicorn runs their Schools' Partnership Programme – an initiative seeking to ‘address the substantial imbalance of the arts in schools, enrich children’s engagement with the arts and support their education and wellbeing.’

The programme is delivered in partnership with several London primary schools in Southwark, Lambeth and Tower Hamlets for children aged 4-11. It consists of access to creative experiences (such as co-creational projects with professional theatre makers and trips to the theatre), bespoke and structured support for teachers and senior leadership, and the opportunity for pupils to influence the Unicorn’s artistic programme by being involved in the creative development of their plays.

The programme seeks to provide the children with access to ‘vital cultural capital’ and ‘strengthen their emotional and mental health, providing space for formation of identity and self-actualisation.’

The Unicorn Theatre has inspired the imagination of generations of children, its dedication to bringing innovative and exciting theatre to London’s children, the breadth of the productions they stage, their extensive schools' programmes, and online resources are truly amazing. The Portal Trust is proud to be a long-term supporter of its work in London schools, as they continue to play a key role in promoting innovation in teaching and developing the aspirations of young Londoners.
